Saturday School

Welcome To Saturday School!

BPS Saturday School takes place every Saturday (excluding holidays and breaks) throughout the school year. We are excited to bring Saturday School back in person within the newly renovated media center at Berkshire Middle School. All K-12 Birmingham Public School students and parents are welcome to join.

What is Saturday School?

In partnership with the Birmingham African American Family Network, Birmingham Public Schools provides tutoring for students who need help in any grade level, and in any academic area. We ask for a $3 donation to help us provide snacks for the students. Each session begins with a guest motivational speaker and/or a welcoming activity led by the Saturday School coordinators. From about 9:15-10:55, each student will be paired with a tutor. At 10:55, we bring the whole group back together for five minutes to discuss what students learned for the day. We believe firmly in creating a caring community of learners at each and every Saturday School. All K 12 BPS students are welcome to receive tutoring for ALL subject areas.

BPS Saturday School Coordinators will be working together with Groves’ and Seaholm NHS students as well as Oakland University student teachers to provide tutoring. Please contact us if you know a student or adult who would like to volunteer to serve as a tutor.

“Saturday School” always ends with “Principal Clinkscale” facilitating a Connector Activity wherein he gives voices to all Scholars while simultaneously praising them for their strong commitment to continuous improvement and forever learning.

How do I sign up?

At this time, there is no sign-up needed to attend Saturday School. Students and families that choose to join us for the in-person tutoring can just show up at Berkshire from 9 am – 11 am on our scheduled Saturdays.
